In Canada, immigrants are always told to accept Canadian values. These are general democratic, liberal values accepted in many societies around the world so nothing so Canadian. But by saying so immigrants are asked to “follow” and “imitate” and one can never become equal by following or imitating. Why these Canadians cannot give up proving their superiority and instead just ask immigrants to follow universal democratic liberal values? This way immigrants are less likely to feel humiliated and more likely to accept the values Canadians admire.
